The Islamic Center of Blacksburg (ICB) is a vibrant and welcoming community dedicated to serving the diverse Muslim population in Blacksburg, VA. As a full-function masjid, we provide a range of religious, educational, and social activities to support both local residents and students at Virginia Tech.
Being in a university town, we take special care to nurture and guide young Muslims, whether they are children of graduate students from around the world or undergraduate students navigating life away from home for the first time.
Our commitment to education, strengthening Islamic identity, and fostering a strong sense of community is central to our mission.

1️⃣ Growing Muslim Community at Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech has a rising student population, including a significant increase in Muslim students.
The demand for prayer spaces, Islamic education, and community support is growing each year.
2️⃣ Serving the Wider Community Beyond Blacksburg
The masjid, located at 113 Soutpark Dr., Blacksburg, VA, will also support Muslims in Christiansburg and Radford, making Islamic services and community engagement more accessible.
Many Muslims in these areas lack a nearby place for prayer and gatherings—this masjid will fill that gap.
3️⃣ Severe Housing Shortage & Pre-Rental Commitments
Virginia Tech ranks #1 in the nation for pre-rental commitments due to a housing shortage indicating high number of students.
Students must sign leases 9-10 months in advance, making it harder for them to find housing near a prayer space.
A centrally located masjid will support students who struggle with long commutes.
4️⃣ A Long History of Struggle & Need for a Permanent Home
ICB was established in 1990 for Da’wa & educational activities. It operated in private homes and rented apartments for 8 years. In 1998, Masjid Al-Hedaya was established in a rented office space with a monthly expense of $1,300 (about $16k/year, ~$160k in the past 10 years). In 2017, the masjid was closed due to an excessive increase in rent.
After decades of renting and struggling with closures, it’s time for a permanent home for the Muslim community in Blacksburg.
5️⃣ Your Donation Builds a Masjid, Not a Multi-Purpose Facility
Every dollar you donate to ICB goes directly toward building and maintaining a dedicated masjid—a sacred house of worship where daily prayers, Quran recitations, and Islamic learning.
Your contributions will never fund gym facilities or non-religious activities, ensuring that all support is focused solely on the masjid and its spiritual services.
Your Sadaqah supports a permanent place of worship, ensuring that your generosity continually serves salah and spiritual growth.
The Islamic Center of Blacksburg (ICB) was more than just a place of worship—it was a home away from home, where the welcoming and friendly community brought people of different cultures together. It fostered a strong sense of belonging through prayers, social activities, and community potlucks, creating lasting friendships and memories.
It is a blessing from Allah to be a part of reviving this project. May Allah bless the efforts of everyone in the team and make it a benefit for all Muslims in the area in Shaa’ Allah…
ICB has a special place in my heart. I was moving to the area and was not a Muslim, but very serious about understanding Islam. I contacted the Imam about prayer times and location and when I arrived was welcomed with open arms by the community. I felt no pressure to become a Muslim, but everyone was always there to answer my questions. The ICB community held many events such as potlucks, picnics, Friday night talks with community members, yard sales, meals for purchase after Jumu’ah, Dawah events on VT campus, and local stores, and many other events to keep the community active and engaged. I have made life long friends around the world that I will cherish always. I have really missed the ICB masjid. I am so excited to see the project continuing.
ICB was the cosy masjid that you would go to any time when you are feeling down and not just at prayer times. You would either find a brother lying down resting, or reading quran, or just having fun and making jokes, Egyptian style :). Sometimes with their family and their kids running around bring life to the masjid. Potlucks were so frequent and the community was so generous and active in sharing their homemade food and sweets. One's PhD journey was not short of times of stagnation and disappointment, being away from my home country and family, ICB was the place to go to where you can find people who were just like family.
I had the pleasure of working with the incredible individuals from the ICB community. Their support and warmth truly make you feel at home. I hope this project reaches a successful conclusion, allowing us to revive the Da'wah activities and restore the impactful initiatives that once benefited everyone.
